When it comes to getting traffic, most companies and individuals will do whatever it takes. Time after time I see websites, often completely unrelated, stuffing keywords, phrases and brand names in their content with a view of getting traffic for that particular term. The PPC market is rife with this with many individuals optimising their advertisements to contain, often trademarked, brand names with a view of enticing search engine users in. In some cases, PPC affiliates even pretend to be the company who they’re affiliataing with in order to generate direct sales from unassuming customers. This is obviously something most companies wish to stamp out, but how do they identify the culprits? Well, in short, they use Google Brand Protection applications which monitor who is bidding / buying ad space containing their brand names. Using applications like this, coupled with a paid search monitor, companies are able to pin point who is bidding on their trademarked brand name with a view of stealing traffic. 9 times out of 10, it is an affiliate of the company themselves who are doing this and often lose their affiliate account and current earnings as a direct result of their traffic stealing.
